If you can January and February, you can March right on

A poem dedicated to the memory of my grandmother, who taught me this saying about the third month.

My maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Ragsdale Prease, had a lot of idioms, wise sayings and adages she shared with us. One was about the third month of the year. She would say, "If you can January and February, then you can March right on".

This meant that if you survived the harsh Winter conditions, you would eventually enjoy Spring weather. I wrote this poem in my grandmother's honor.

March Right On

Christmas and New Year are now in the past

How you wished those wonderful moments would last

Freezing temperatures leave you chilled to the bone

Slipping and sliding on ice, and your hair is windblown

The sun sets early, as night comes too soon

You long for sunlight as you gaze at the moon

Depression and social anxiety set in

You’re avoiding contact with family and friends

Cheer up, the days are growing in length

The sun will shine more and giving you strength

Snow, ice, and sleet will soon be over

You can search in the grass for four-leaf clovers

Set your mind on Spring weather that soon will dawn

If you make it through January and February

Then you can March right on
