Shh,
This shall only be but a moment of your time.
Today you’ve kissed your loved one, hugged your child
Last night you slept soundly, no?
And, yesterday you got paid because it was Friday.
There’s a beautiful skyline
Laughter rings in the air
But have you ever heard the tears from a bagpipe?
Have you ever heard the somber howl of a k-9?
Have you ever been given a folded flag?
Everyone is entitled to that American dream.
But we lost track of how it’s supposed to be.
Everyday someone dies for you to live freely
A name on the wall of fallen heroes,
Never forgotten by their families,
But always by society.
So that you can lay in peace at night,
Meanwhile that same day, a widow was made,
A widow who was greeted not to their spouse,
But by a folded flag and a stranger holding back tears in their eyes
Secretly thankful, it wasn't them.
To the daughters who will never walk down the aisle with their father,
To the sons who will never get to dance alongside their mother,
I grieve with a heavy heart,
How could I ever thank them enough?
Gratitude and respect, sure
I like many others have a lifestyle full of comfort
Due to their loyalty and oath,
I would like to thank you for your time,
Please allow us to remember those who have fallen, as well as those serving.
For no greater love is this, that one shall lay down their life for a friend.
Let us have a moment of silence…

This is deeply moving. The way it shifts from everyday comforts to the immense sacrifice behind them is powerful. The folded flag, the widow, the children—it all hits with quiet devastation. A beautiful, solemn tribute.
Beautiful and haunting, and also incredibly grounding... Sending this to my boyfriend who served 20 years and retired in the Marines, and his parents. Thank you!
