Expectations are vexatious things
Building castles of wood and sticks
Never stopping to think whether they be right or wrong
Or whether they be ill-timed or thought out E
xpectations are dangerous things
Erecting structures with no foundations
And placing people on tottering pedestals
Awaiting effervescent miracles like smoke in the wind
Expectations are for starry-eyed believers
Cruising on cloud nine
Expecting miracles of gold and silver
From earthen vessels of blood and bone
Expectations, swift killers of relationships and friendships
Lying in wait to receive what was never promised
Forgetting to set clear boundaries and definitions
And ushering in the bitter and inevitable heartbreak
Expectations are gleeful destroyers
Seeking perfection and saintliness
From mortal flawed beings
As far from saints as could ever be
Sinners all we seeking the mercies of God
Expectations are unreasonable things
Flying in the face of conventional wisdom
Believing only what they so choose
Blinded to the harsh realities of life and living
Expectations are tumultuous things
Demanding from others what it cannot give
Laying in wait with unfounded accusations
Of unfulfilled hopes and promises
Premised on could-have-knowns; should-have-knowns and ought-to-have-knowns
Expectations, Expectations, Expectations
Stealthy deadly killers
The bane of the introverts very existence
Eliciting passive aggressive responses and reactions
Waiting in the wings seeking
Fulfillment of the unsaids and unknowns
Expectations, Expectations, recipients of the odious titles of
‘Relationship killers’; ‘Friendship enders’ and ‘Marriage breakers’
‘Joy stealers’; ‘Promise breakers’; and ‘Fulfillment bashers’
Who will redeem expectations from its sordid reputation
