Desperately Seeking the 1980s
I miss the 1980s. No, I'm not talking about the neon jelly shoes, scrunchie-wearing, Jem watching, tween version of the 80s. I'm talking the full-on, Bright Lights Big City, Miami Vice version of the Bonfire of the Vanities 1980s. The I-turned-21-in-1985, 80s. And no, I didn't line up in club bathrooms for lines of coke, but I did have to weave my around my snorting friends to get to a stall, drink in one hand, cigarette in the other. I don't remember how I managed to pull down my pantyhose for a pee.

Now that I have reached the big 40, I have seen the fashions of my youth been revived, "updated", and become trendy again. However, even in my youth, I hated high wasted jeans, neon colors, stupid "fashionable" sunglasses, giant sneakers with scrunchy socks, scrunchy hair accessories, butterfly hair clips, slap bracelets, cargo pants, combat boots, overalls with one strap hanging loose, pants so baggy I could camp in them, etc.

Something Unpredictable
Tie-dye, animal prints, and printed leggings are all in the past. Or are they? All of these fashion trends swam across the oceans of '90s sitcoms and music videos, providing hopes of becoming an extremely cool teenager one day. Not to mention some very unrealistic expectations of what an actual teenager indeed looks like, compared to some beautiful 20-somethings. Pop a poster of Gwen Stefani or Brad Pitt up on your ceiling for inspiration because you're going back to a simpler yet more complicated time! The fashion of the '90s brings a smile to my face and warmth to my heart.

When it comes to the nostalgia of clothing trends, my first thought is when did I feel most comfortable in my body? Clothes have always been a way for me to cover up the insecurities of not feeling skinny or attractive. “Fashion never goes out of date.” Not changing your style to the current standards means you will never go out on a date. But indeed, you could try your best to be unique, but in this cruel society, you know that at least one person will judge you. But let us pretend like society is extraordinary, and no one got judged for wearing out-of-date clothes. If that was a possibility I would definitely want to wear clothes from the Victorian Era. No one wears those kinds of clothes anymore because there are crop tops, sweat pants, sweatshirts, and more things that are in style.

A confession, I have never been into fashion trends. There was a time in my life that I swore up and down I would become a fashion photographer. But, growing up I wore hand-me-downs from a boy family member. While the rest of the girls in my class wore bell-bottom jeans and cute sundresses I wore baggy jeans that my mom hemmed to almost fit me. The only time I was technically following a trend was by mistake. When I fell into depression in high school I wore the same black sweater with my hood up every day. I was labeled an “emo” kid and fit right in with the “scene” trend in the early 2000s. Regardless of my lack of fashion culture, there are trends I wish would come back in style to stick around forever.
