Not So Fast, Fashion
Good things take time. Or at least that is what we've been told. Fast fashion, on the other hand, became a global phenomenon precisely because well.. it made fashion fast. And cheap clothing produced on a massive scale means less spending and more saving for all.

Fashion or Fail...
2020 was interesting for fashion because it was almost pointless to dress up when no one could go anywhere. Face masks became mandatory and people got creative with them, either sporting bling-y masks or coordinated outfits they became fun and aside from the necessity of them I loved that they became incorporated into the 2020 fashion trends.

Pandemic PSA
Let’s face it - 2020 was rough. In the US alone, mass unemployment stripped millions of financial security, racial tensions reached a (long overdue) boiling point, bipartisan fighting and a historic election threatened the values of our democracy, and everything was underscored by a pandemic that cost people around the globe their lives, livelihoods, and ways of life.

Fashion Trends That Should Be Left In 2020
2020. Where do we start with you, 2020? Should we start with the biggest civil rights movement since THE civil rights movement? No, that’s too, as some highly intelligent, civilized, and totally, not at all, can’t possibly be racist folks would put it, “divisive“. Shall we begin with the most intense, high-stakes presidential election since.....well, ever? No. Also too “divisive”. Should we talk about the highly deadly, and badly handled, pandemic that has killed more Americans than combat has U.S soldiers in WWII? Total vibe killer. In all seriousness, 2020 has a truly awful year for an really inordinate amount of people. Nearly all lines of work and forms of culture have taken massive hits as a result of COVID-19, the music, medical, and film industries chief among them. Another field that has suffered a severe loss in capital is fashion. The fashion industry has lost hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue, and countless iconic retailers have been forced to file for bankruptcy and close stores across the world. Also suffering, apparently, is the quality and taste of the trends shoved down our throats. While I wouldn’t call last year a crapshoot in terms of nice trends, I have also seen some of the most perplexing and strangest trends I’ve ever seen in my brief, 20 year existence. The perplexing, strange, and just plain unattractive fashion is what I’m here to talk about, because if we can’t agree that an literal white supremacist shouldn’t ever be allowed a term in the highest office in the world, if we can’t agree that men shouldn’t be pinned to the pavement and smothered to death because of counterfeit $20 bills or dare I say it, because of race/skin color, if we can’t even agree that wearing masks to combat an airborne virus is smart, we can at least laugh at the stupidest, most mind-boggling fashion choices that was born out of this year and agree that NOBODY should ever waste their money on them. Right? Right?

the girl dances
Rather than the fashion trend that I hope to go out of style, the trend I hope to see grow is repurposing something old into something new. With the growing reality of textile pollution from the childhood insecurity of not really having many options of clothes--always outgrowing clothes but never having any to grow into, I definitely had to get creative. I would wear in 9th grade the same black tank top, sweater wrap, and jeans nearly every day. Each day was defined by a different braid in my hair and one of the 99 cent scarves from the thrift store display. Hopefully leaving behind the scratchy feeling of plastics looming in your clothing--repurposing, redesigning, and recycling the garments we already have into something completely novel would be a step forward to the future. I have been shopping at thrift stores for as long as I can remember--it was all my family could afford growing up. Exploring through the aisles of nametags from past lives felt as if I was wandering through a library of books waiting to be opened.

That Was So Yesterday
High Fashion Everyone knows that now in days most trends either start from music artists, celebrities, or influencers. They hold the holy grail for what should, shouldn't, and could be. All it takes is one post with a catchy caption, one verse with a great line, or one outing featuring a hot outfit that catches the eyes of paparazzi to be seen in magazines everywhere; From there the world starts to mirror what now has been deemed as fashionable/trendy.

Bike Short Must Be Banned!
Let’s be clear and direct for cause and effect; because a Kardashian stepped out sporting a shorty fashion doesn’t mean you need to grab the passion. Bike shorts worn for a specific purpose, I get, but to wear them with heels provokes no appeal but instead a disgust I can’t conceal.

Tiger Print and Tie-Dye, My Oh My!
2020 in itself was tantalizing and traumatizing for every single person I know. Nobody came out of 2020 unscathed or unchanged in some way or another. I've decided to leave any *bad energy* behind me and am only looking forward to brighter and bigger things. Ridding myself of 2020 includes purging my closet of items that suddenly leave a bad taste in my mouth since quaratine life began.

The Return of the Smize
We often hear a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear. That advice is now irrelevant when half your face is covered. In 2020, masks became a fashion statement and a political one. Once thought of as part of a surgeon's uniform, now the most noticeable style accessory to show off your personality or activism.
