On Monday January 12, Somers traveled to Kennedy Catholic High School, and a 20-18 third quarter game did justice to the crosstown rivalry. But the scales were soon tipped on the court, and the inbalance clanged to the sound of the down town three ball.
Swish after swish, Kennedy's Reese Carlo caught fire and lit the Tuskers up with five triples that led the way to a definitive 44-34 victory.
The Gael got the game going too. Her block down low on Eli Contreras began the fast break, and Maddie Arrigale finished the incursion with a conventional three point play.
In at six minutes and 41 seconds, Somers took no time to answer right back. Kacey McCullough swung across the paint for a layup off the glass, and Contreras sunk two from the free throw line to give the visitors a slim 4-3 lead.
Not for long, Kennedy began to fire away and the downtown train provided the bullets. Arrigale swished a pair of three balls, and next, Carlo added the first of her long game.
12-5 at the start of the second period, the Somers girls kept pace for the moment. Ava Schmidberger found Emma Flores all alone under the basket for an easy layup, and after Ashley Kuchinsky ripped down the defensive rebound, the Tuskler guard went coast to coast for a 12-10 deficit.
Not quite done, Kuchinsky got the steal at half court and put the Tuskers on the offense path. A miss later, Caitlyn Mayfield grabbed the offensive rebound, kicked the rock to McCullough in the corner, and the center buried a jump shot to tie the game at 12.
Contreras maintained the status quo by driving straight down the paint with 25 seconds left in the half, but Kennedy Catholic didn’t let Somers take the momentum into the locker room. Lianna Bonavita drained a three point jumper and put the long range writing on the home team's walls.
First to the blackboard, the determined guard opened the third period with the first triple, but Shea Mullins put a pause on the foretelling. The freshman sank an underhand layup to make the score 20-16, and after coming up with a steal at five minutes and thirty seconds, McCullough was set up to go off glass with another easy layup.
Carlo was now ready to cook for her team, though. She came up with the steal at half court and extended the lead to five with her second three of the afternoon. Kuchinsky did answer back from downtown and then the line, but three points was as close as Somers would get.
Thanks to Carlo, the sharpshooter closed the quarter with a pair from above the arc and opened the fourth with three more points. An 11 point lead, the star of the game closed in next. She made a baseline drive and netted another triple at the free throw line.
Somers did get it back to a 42-34 game on Kuchinsky’s fast break layup, but one minute was not nearly enough to make up the distance that Kennedy Catholic put between the two teams.
