5 Overhyped Budapest Experiences
What not to do in Budapest (and better alternatives)
Budapest is bold, beautiful and full of contrasts — but not every famous experience lives up to the hype. After multiple visits to Budapest, here are five popular things I’d personally skip (or rethink) to make your trip smoother, calmer and more authentic.
1. Széchenyi at Peak
Yes, Széchenyi Thermal Bath is iconic — those yellow walls and steaming outdoor pools are postcard-perfect. But by midday it can feel overcrowded, pricey and more like a social media set than a relaxing spa. If you’re after atmosphere, try Rudas Baths instead for its Ottoman dome and moodier, old-world vibe.
2. New York Café Queues
The interior of New York Café is undeniably glamorous. But long lines and average food (for premium prices) make it more about the photo than the experience. I’d rather book brunch at Cirkusz Café or dinner at TwentySix — both stylish, but far more satisfying.
3. Party Boat Cruises
A Danube cruise sounds romantic — and it can be. But the cheaper unlimited prosecco versions often turn into loud floating parties. If you want cinematic views of the illuminated Hungarian Parliament Building, opt for a smaller dinner cruise with live music instead.
4. Mega Pub Crawls
Ruin bars are part of Budapest’s DNA, especially Szimpla Kert. But oversized organized bar crawls can feel rushed and chaotic. Exploring a couple of spots independently lets you actually enjoy the quirky courtyards and creative details.
5. Midday Bastion Crowds
Fisherman's Bastion is magical — just not at noon. In the middle of the day it’s packed with tour groups and chimney cake lines. Go at sunrise or after sunset for the views you imagined.
Skip the hype, choose smarter timing, and Budapest becomes far more rewarding.
