solo travel
You've got somewhere to go, but no one to go with; solo travel is the nexus of independence and opportunity.
In the Middle
I often look back on the busses and mountains in Switzerland. I was somewhere in between. It started off with running in the dirt and on the grass, with a backpack two times the size of me hitting my tailbone to an annoying beat. I was late for my bus to Zurich. One of, I had heard, the most expensive places in the world. I had convinced myself that I’d never make it now, that the bus would leave, and, poor me, I’d have to stay in Amsterdam – forever stoned and full. The thoughts that go through your head during moments of intense panic are always interesting, to say the least.

Mustikkakeitto (Spiced Blueberry Soup) Sorbet
Our sense of smell continues to transport us to our memories, long after other senses have faded. Writing about travel now requires me to tap that sense, for the idea of starting a day in one place and ending it in one halfway around the world sounds these days to me like something I only ever read about in dusty old books. My only real connection to faraway places in the last seventeen months has been in my kitchen, casting spells over the stove.

In the Land of the Snow Queen
In a riverside town in Denmark, a little girl and a little boy become the best of friends. Gerda and Kai both come from poor families, with few toys or shiny clothes to wear, and they never get to ride in carriages. But they have each other. Tending the roses that bloom in the hanging boxes between the gables of their parents’ garrets, they form a neighborly bond. They sit together under the flowers, and in wintertime in the yard below, they pelt each other with snowballs, or stick coins to the windows and peer at each other through holes in the frost.
