On Showing and Telling
I’m reasonably sure that even the meme about how everyone says "show don’t tell" is a meme. Naturally I’m just your average internet goblin so I'm hardly the definitive source. But what I am certain about is that this standard piece of advice isn’t worth the paper it's written on.

I Joined a Writing Group!
Writing groups. We all hear about how insightful they can be, but how many of us are part of a group that isn't online? I know it's convenient to just log onto Facebook, LinkedIn, or Discord and chat with like-minded writers, along with sharing our work and hoping for reads.

I wrote a book. Top Story - May 2023.
Around a month ago I finished writing a book. It's a project I started in July 2021, and it took me nearly 2 years to get a rough manuscript completed. From the time I started the book to the time I finished a complete rough draft, I earned a master's degree and moved almost 800 miles away from the place I called home my entire life. I often discredit my accomplishment because "I should have done it faster." But I often neglect all of the things I was doing in between, such as raising a toddler and working odd jobs to get by.

I’ll Be Brief
I have been writing for Vocal for a little over a year now. I wouldn’t call myself the most prolific writer. I average about one or two stories a month, but I have fun with it. Maybe someday I’ll write a book, but for now it is short stories and amusing personal anecdotes.

Coming soon: my first book!
In 2016, I noticed something strange about the clock in our bedroom, the one that been on the wall for at least a year. It was a simple clock, brown with black Roman numerals, an uncoloured picture of a house in the centre. But this time, I realised the clock had a flaw. The Roman numeral for the number 8 was backwards; the III was in front of the V. A thought popped into my head.

The Next Level
Being your own boss isn't easy, especially when you're a writer. Aside from actually writing a book, you've now got to advertise and market it, particularly for those few who prefer an actual book in their hands. Sure, word of mouth from satisfied readers is a great thing, but that momentum takes time to build, and future readers need to know that you exist, first.

Nobel-ling It
It is now a very cold day in January, and there seems to be some talk about the Super Bowl and the eventual winners and losers of the great American grudge match. I really do not care for big sports events, excluding the Stanley Cup (mostly for the joy of seeing the Toronto Maple Leafs once again refuse to accept their pathetic nature and just suffer properly in the regular season). But there is one event that I do look forward to every autumn. This is the Nobel Prize season, a week taken out of October to both disturb and annoy those few who still care.
