Literary Citizenship
Before I even knew what it was, I wrote a bit about Literary Citizenship in these two previous articles - The Benefits of Reciprocity for Writers and Giving and Receiving Feedback. I recently ran across the actual term for it while reading a book by Jane Friedman called “The Business of Being a Writer,” where she gave credit to editor Rob Spillman for coining the term. Literary Citizenship is described as “activities that support reading, writing and publishing in the literary community.”

We Are All Writers
Introduction We are our own worst critics in everything. My mind is always telling me I am not good enough to write, play music, or be worthy to be friends with anyone. You know what I ignore that voice and go ahead and do it anyway. I know I am not a major player on Vocal, Medium, or anywhere but I am doing Ok for myself, with a big subscription base and a lot of reads, so I am doing something right.

Master List of Publications. Top Story - August 2023.
I’ve been submitting fiction to publications for about two years now and it has been a process that just keeps developing. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure where to start. I found a small list of 10 or so publications online and started with those. Over time I have found more lists in various places that people have compiled. Usually lists of 10-20 publications. I’ll find an odd one here or there… I’ve gotten recommendations from other writers on Vocal… on Medium… and I have now compiled my own list of 85 publications that I have submitted to or plan to submit to. (Thank you to ALL who have provided me with places!)

Mythological Parallels
Parallels in mythology fascinate me, for I feel it can be interpreted as a sign that different mythologies could have been born from different accounts of the same events. The way information is recorded and passed down in ancient times is highly susceptible to change; some stories are recited through oral tradition for years, then finally written down. It’s only to be expected that with time, as different orators tell the tales and different scribes write them down, that these tales break off in separate directions while still having a similar backbone.
