Dear Trayvon . Top Story - February 2024.
Dear Trayvon, My name is Joe Patterson. We don’t know each other, but we have a lot in common. We are both young Black males, we have both faced ignorance and discrimination because of our skin color and we share a birthday, February 5th. I just wanted to write you a letter to let you know how life has been going since you’ve been gone.

People Who Inspired Me to be a Writer: N.W.A
”You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge…” Those are the words of Dr. Dre as the opening lines of Hip Hop ensemble NWA’s debut song “Straight Outta Compton”. When ranking all of my favorite Hip Hop groups, NWA is definitely my number one. No group has inspired me more than NWA. They literally taught me the blueprint for how to make great, everlasting Hip Hop and they are also one of my biggest inspirations for becoming a writer.

Cookie & Papa: Cancer Survivors
February 4th is World Cancer Day. It’s a time when cancer awareness is front and center. If there is anything that resonates with me most about this day it’s the fact that both of my grandparents, Erma Gwendolyn Spencer and Harry James Spencer are the two mightiest warriors to fight cancer that I have ever known.

Forgotten Literature
Hello. I am The Black Experience in Revolutionary North Carolina. Yes that is my name. If you’re wondering why my name is so long it’s because I am a book and I was written by Jeffrey J. Crow. I am a book on Black History and the person I belong to is a young Black male. Today is the third day of February and I should be extremely happy because this is the month for which I should be read and celebrated the most. But the truth is I am not happy. I am actually very disappointed because my owner has misplaced me.

Apollo: a tribute to Carl Weathers
One weekend when I was like five years old, I went over my dad’s house for the weekend and he rented the movie Predator (1987). It was my first time ever watching it and I was excited because I was a big Arnold Schwarzenegger fan. One of the main characters in the movie was a guy named Dillon, portrayed by Carl Weathers, the equally muscle bound best friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character. This was my introduction to the legendary and sure enough I would become a fan of all of his work as an actor as I grew up.

Simunyé: The Color of Friendship
On the night of my seventh birthday, February 5, 2000, Disney Channel premiered their latest original television movie titled The Color of Friendship. Now if you were a 90’s kid like me then you would of course remember that in the late 90’s and early 2000’s Disney TV was some of the best and most watched television around and still is today. One of the most watched segments of Disney Channel is DCOM, which stands for Disney Channel Original Movie. The Color of Friendship was one of their earliest original movies, it was also one of their best and most impactful titles because of it’s true story and social commentary.

Wallet World
Hi. I bet you wanna know my name, well I’ve got news for you, I don’t have a name. I’m not a person, I’m actually just a piece of property. An important piece of property I might add, but I don’t think my owner caught that newsflash. I am a wallet and if you haven’t been living on planet earth for well, ever, then you should know that I house some of the most important belongings for my owner including: a driver’s license, money, credit cards, state issued ID’s, even MVP cards for when you wanna knock a couple of dollars and cents off some of that high priced food you’re likely to purchase at food lion.

Winter’s Icing
Well here I am. Just a little kid reveling in the last day of winter. It is also not lost to me that on this final day of winter we were given a snow day. Though it is cloudy and the fluffy white snow is still here, in a matter of minutes the clouds will fade away and the sun will be out. Don’t get me wrong, I love the sun and the heat, it’s actually my favorite time of the year, but there’s just something about the snow that I’ll always have a soft spot for.
