I'm a published author/artist but tend to think of myself as a doodler\dabbler. I've sailed the NW Passage & wrote & illustrated a book, ARCTIC ODYSSEY. Currently, I live on 50 semi wilderness acres & see lots of wild critters in the yard.

ROOM 254
The old man awakened when he felt his hospital bed rolling through a large open doorway. The long narrow ward that he had shared with nine other men of various ages had been his home for the past ten or eleven days, but he couldn’t remember which, since he had been asleep most of his stay. A male orderly was pushing his bed while another one managed the battery powered IV pump, to ensure the designated saline solution was dripping into his old, worn out, cancer ridden body. When the bed rolled to a stop at the elevator, the men began chatting. From what the old man could discern, they were both about the same age, early 30’s, had similar hairdos and facial hair, the fashion being a three-to-five-day old beard. He couldn’t quite hear all their conversation but from the little information he could glean, they were talking about a pretty nurse they wouldn’t mind getting their hands on.

SOMETHING IS OUT THERE
Bernie and his friend Al were eager to be on their way as they piled their metal detecting equipment, tent, other supplies, plus enough booze to last them for a week, into the back of Al’s truck. They had heard about an old, abandoned log cabin that had belonged to a trapper, who supposedly had disappeared, most likely froze to death while out checking his traps during the winter. The trapper seldom earned much money from the furs when he brought them into town at the end of winter. However, the small bag of gold nuggets that he cashed in at the assay office was always more than enough to buy everything he needed for the year. Although the trapper never staked a claim, it was rumored that he had discovered the mother lode, or a stream filled with gold. And this was why they were headed to the cabin with dreams of striking it rich. They felt certain if there was any hidden gold, the metal detectors would find it.

TAURUS
Taurus, the bull, is most prominent during the winter and is located in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is an Earth sign, and during the ancient cultures, the bull’s horns were portrayed upward and backward. However, according to Greek mythology, the horns are pointing forward. One of Zeus’ (god of sky and thunder) lovers was the mortal Lo (Argive princess) and to disguise her so she wouldn’t be recognized by his wife Hera (goddess and queen of the gods) he disguised her as a heifer, a common cow. Hmm, that Zeus, he must have been a very horny god because he had many mistresses.

ARIES
The constellation of Aries can be located in the northern celestial hemisphere. Aries is formed by a ram’s horns since Babylonian times and before that, it was shaped as a farmhand. According to Greek mythology, a golden ram rescued the twin brothers Phrixus and Helle by Hermes (herald of the gods) from being slain by King Athamas’ second wife Ino because she was very jealous of his children. Unfortunately, Helle should have held onto Aries’ horns more tightly because he fell off during the flight and drowned in the Strait of Gallipoli. Aries is a fire sign.

PISCES
Pisces is the last of the twelve zodiac signs. There are no prominent stars in this constellation and most of it is covered by Aquarius. Pisces is sometimes depicted as a shark, but it is usually portrayed by two fishes swimming in opposite directions that are linked together by a string attached to their mouths. According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite (Venus) and her son Eros (Cupid) transformed into fish so they could escape the serpentine giant Typhon. Another myth, which sounds a little fishy, is that an egg fell into the Euphrates river and it was rolled ashore by a couple of fish, whereupon some doves sat on the egg until it was hatched. Since fish are involved it’s no surprise that the Pisces sign is of course water.

AQUARIUS
Aquarius is one of the oldest zodiac constellations and is Latin for “water-carrier” or “cup-carrier”. Beta Aquarii is the brightest star in the constellation and can be found in what is known as the “Sea”. Greek mythology claims that Eos, the goddess of the dawn, kidnapped Ganymede, the most beautiful mortal to ever exist. He must have been extremely good-looking because Zeus then stole him from Eos to be his own personal water-bearer at Mount Olympus. One would think that Aquarius would be a water sign, but no, it is an air sign.

CAPRICORN
Capricorn (Capricornus) is an earth sign and the smallest constellation in the zodiac. Although its stars are not the brightest ones in the heavens, it can be seen with the naked eye. According to Greek mythology Capricorn is sometimes thought to be Pan, the god of nature, shepherds and flocks. He had the ears, horns and the hind legs of a goat but when Typhon, one of the deadliest, gigantic serpentine creatures tried to kill him, he transformed his legs into a long fish’s tail and dove into a river to escape it. Unfortunately, since Capricorn was a horny little devil, used to be a real lady-killer, because of his new not so becoming appearance, they fled as soon as they saw him coming.

SAGITTARIUS
The constellation Sagittarius, a fire sign, is located in the southern celestial hemisphere and is shaped like an archer with a horse’s body. He is drawing his bow, the arrow supposedly aimed at Scorpio’s heart. Some say that Sagittarius is known as Chiron, the wisest and most just of all the centaurs, changed into a horse to escape his jealous wife. Although she could run very fast, she wasn’t able to run as fast as a horse, so she was left in the dust.

LIBRA
The Libra constellation is in the southern hemisphere. It is the only symbol of the zodiac not represented by a person or animal. An inanimate object, a balanced set of scales signifies its importance. Greek mythology claims that Astraea, the daughter of Themis (titan of law and order) ascended to heaven carrying the scales of justice (Libra’s symbol).

SCORPIO
According to Greek mythology, Orion (Poseidon’s son) was not only a giant but was considered the handsomest man alive. Apollo’s sister, Artemis (goddess of the hunt and moon) and Orion were avid hunting partners, which made Apollo extremely jealous. As a matter of fact, he was so jealous, he had Mother Earth sic a giant scorpion on Orio, which stung him to death. Scorpio is quite a large constellation and is found in the southern hemisphere. Antares, a bright reddish star, is the scorpion’s heart. Oddly enough, although scorpions don’t exist in the sea, it is a water sign.

VIRGO
Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac and is the largest constellation. Like an alluring virgin, Virgo can be seen mainly in the northern hemisphere during March and April by locating Spica, its brightest star and following the curve of the big dipper. One of the Greek myths specifies that Virgo is Erigone, the daughter of Icarius. After knocking back bottles of wine with Dionysus (god of the grape harvest) until he was totally inebriated, could hardly stand up, his shepherds killed him. Erigone was so overcome with grief because of her father’s death, she hanged herself. Since Icarius was one of Dionysus’ favourite drinking buddies, he placed the father and daughter amongst the stars.
