America's Fascination with Serial Killers

By Kasey AdamsPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

America has had a fascination with serial killers for decades. One of the most popular serial killers to date is none other than Ted Bundy. Born Theodore Robert Bundy on November 24, 1946, in Burlington, VT. He was an American serial killer that kidnapped, raped, and murdered young women during the 70's. Numerous documentaries and movies sparked from Ted Bundy and his horrific crimes.

Here are the Top 3 Must See Ted Bundy Movies:

#3 Ted Bundy

Released in 2002, rated R, 1hr 39 mins. Written by Stephen Johnston and Matthew Bright. Starring Michael Reilly Burke as Ted and Boti Bliss as Lee (Elizabeth Kloepfer)

This movie is one of the first movies that I remember watching about Ted Bundy. I put it 3rd on the list because I believe that it was a general classic version of Ted. The movie received mixed reviews after it aired in 2002. It holds a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie starts with Ted's time Seattle in 1974 when he was in law school. It portrays some of his more "popular" kills during his years of terror. From luring women with a broken arm to disguising himself as a police officer. After leaving a trail of kills Ted is arrested after a victim gets away by flinging herself out of his car. He escapes from jail by jumping out of the courthouse window. He continues on his kills and is finally apprehended in Florida. He is convicted and sentenced to death.

#2 The Deliberate Stranger

Released in 1986 and 3hr 5 minutes. Starring Mark Harmon as Ted Bundy. Yes Mark Harmon, better known as Gibbs from the popular TV series NCIS. This movie is labeled as a "TV Mini-series" however it deserves to be in the Top 3. I list it as #2 for the mere fact that my #1 is just non-negotiable. The Deliberate Stranger is one of the most accurate depictions of his crimes. Mark Harmon does a great job at embodying the charismatic attitude that Bundy had. This movie gives a look into the young mind of Bundy, who had criminal trouble when he was teenager. Those crimes were expunged from his record. These smaller crimes would later lead to the horrific crimes he committed as a young adult. Bundy admitted to attempting his first kidnapping years prior to his first "admitted" kill in 1971.

If you have never seen this oldie it is a must see. An oldie but a goodie.

#1 Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

Released in 2019, Rated R, and 1hr 50 mins. Written by Elizabeth Kendall, based on the book "The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy" by Michael Werwie. Starring Zac Efron as Ted and Lilly Collins as Elizabeth.

This is movie is my favorite movie made to date about Ted Bundy. The movie focuses a lot on the perspective of Elizabeth "Liz". She was in a long-term relationship with Ted during his blood bath of a crime spree. This was a fascinating part about Ted. He was had a functioning relationship with a woman that resembled his victims. The question always popped into my head, "Why not her?" Ted seemed to show no emotion when it came to killing his victims. Liz matched his victims. What made her different than the others?

Liz was ultimately the one that first gave the police Ted's name during the investigation. This movie gives us a good look into not only his crimes but the mental turmoil that Liz went through being in a relationship with a serial killer. Not to mention that Zac Efron was cast as Ted. He is such a popular actor and clearly a heart throb to many. It also brough up the idea of "romanticizing" a murderer. However, that was all a part of Ted. He was considered an attractive man. There were multiple women that came to attend his trial, in the courtroom, and waiting outside.

Looks can be evil too.
