literature
Families and literature go hand in hand; fictional families to entertain, reflect and inspire.
Walter
It was 10pm on a Saturday night. I was sitting on the 4 train heading back to my apartment in Brooklyn. Staring straight ahead and burning a hole through the ad on the wall in front of me. I had just walked out on a Tinder date that was a disaster before it started. Now I was on my way home, angry and confused. All my friends were having a good experience with dating apps. It was like the internet just handed them their soulmates. I couldn’t understand why this was so difficult for me. Trying to make sense of—why, was making me feel dizzy. I am an honest empathetic law abiding citizen. I vote and give money and food to the homeless. I am smart enough to have a job with health insurance, but I choose to work as a mentor in a mice infested elementary school that lacks basic resources. I put my heart and soul into my students and do my best to make the world a better place. I volunteer at the food bank in Harlem every Saturday. Why is the universe punishing me?

Little Book of Surprises
“Get those boxes too. The ones by your bed.” I instructed my fourteen-year-old son Caleb. “Make sure they’re tapped all the way up.” I stood at the doorway as I watched him packing away the last of his things. “They’re tapped.” He double checked before standing up to look at me. “You ok ma?” I smiled softly. “I’ll be ok.”

The Pirates Lost and Forgotten Gold
It was morning in the summer of 1870 and 10 year old Alice black curly hair was blowing fiercely in the wind as she ran in a field to catch William and Robert, twin boys, their blond golden hair glistening in the summer sun as they ran. Alice soon caught up to them and tagged them both before dropping to the ground gasping for air after running around in the hot sun for hours, Robert and William sat down next to her. After some time Alice, Robert, and William were looking up at the big fluffy clouds in the bright blue sky.

Before You Go I Love You
The saline enters my veins, and its cooling effect assures me the plasma donation is finished. I'm still on five cycles to complete the process, but getting closer to only needing four. A phlebotomist looks over to me. “Are you doing okay?” I nod and give her a thumbs up. One of the on-staff physicians, Katie, is disconnecting me. “You need to drink more water, Sean," she says as a playful scold. "Your next available donation date is the sixteenth."

They That Enter See The Light
And just like that, the lights went out. This was the second time in a month Johnna groped in the dark feeling for the hanging bulb that eluded her every time. Why was it so hard to find it, the barn wasn't that big? She answered her own question. Her grandfather installed the lights himself in 1910 sometime after building a separate room for himself away from the rest of the family. He was peculiar like that and that was the very reason she was here. She recalled her aunts speaking of Pa John's "room", and her curiosity had gotten the best of her. Every since she was a child she wanted to go in Pa's room, but no one was allowed to. Now as a grown up, and the family house vacant, she had no one to tell her the barn was off limits.

The Little Black Notebook
The Little Black Notebook. By Dguima. My Mom use to tell me I was destined for greatness! My father kept saying, “dream as high as you can my love, because if you don’t get to see your “higher” of “highest” dream come to life you will still have gotten all those other ones granted.” My grandma, a tarot reader, would also add, your spirit guides and ancestors have told me that, “You will have many blessings throughout your life”. I carried their words close to my heart and found comfort in them, as all three of them passed away when I was still a teenager.

The little black notebook
Catherine was galloping on her horse on the beautiful Australian land, the gorgeous orange sunset was behind her, but what she could think of was that how much she hates the mud on her clothes, and that smell of the cows that she has to live with every single day. She was a hard-worker. She grew up learning the work morale from her father whom she dearly loved. But since he passed away, she didn’t think there’s a reason for her to stay. She’s always wanted to travel, and now she couldn’t think of anything else but to get away once and for all, and forget about everything that has been too much for her to take. She didn’t have cash to spend on that lifestyle, so she was considering to sell the farm and move.
