Old-Fashioned Raisin Bread
My father-in-law wasn't much for words but, one day he stopped by while I was making bread and asked me if I could make raisin bread. I told him that I had never made it but, I would be honored to give it a whirl. Well, I did and he loved it! From then on it was official. "Papaw" was a soft touch when he had his fresh homemade raisin bread.

Beat the Heat With Chilled Yogurt
Nothing cools a hot and humid afternoon like a bowl of chilled yogurt – homemade or packed. I love to have a serving of spiced or sweetened chilled yogurt as a snack on a summer day. The best part about yogurt, or curd, is that it can be transformed into so much in such a little time; and with minimum effort. Moreover, it is much healthier than the other junk most of us munch on when we’re troubled by hunger pangs.

Stuffed Green Peppers — Oven or Microwave
I grew up making these in my "Home Economics" days or, as some of us fondly like to call it, "Homemaking Class" days. This was a family favorite of my dad's but, not so much my children. They would wrinkle their noses, step back and look at me like they were being led to the gallows!

When Raw Becomes Yummy!
A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. All of us claim to know this but seldom accept it and do something to this end. When it comes to fitness, most of us start finding excuses and avoid accepting the fact that we are too lazy to work out or meditate or go for a run. In such a setting, the easiest way to bring a little health consciousness into our lives is by restricting ourselves from consuming fatty food and opting for healthier dishes. And when it comes to opting for a healthy diet, one of the first options that come to mind is a bowl of fresh salad!

Peeling Back the Banana Industry
I’ve got beef with the banana industry. Why? It’s hard to believe that peeling back the familiar yellow facade reveals such a dark and abusive industry. Bananas are the favourite fruit of a number of the world’s developed countries, including — but certainly not limited to — the United States, Britain, and Canada, with 7.1 billion, 2.5 billion, and 3 billion banana consumed annually, respectively, in 2015. With over 107 million tonnes produced per year, bananas comprise a massive industry, one that is highly, highly concentrated in the hands of three major corporations: Dole, Del Monte, and Chiquita.

Bagels
There is something magical about kneading a dough. The moment when the flour finally binds with water and yeast, when it all combines into a compact lump of new life, never stops to amaze me. The waiting, if it will raise, makes me feel part of something bigger. It gives me purpose. I become the creator of new life in my very own universe.

Fake Pepper Steak with Fresh Green Beans
This recipe goes back as far as I can remember, but not when I was a child. I don't know why it was called pepper steak because there was no peppers or green peppers in it. The only pepper is the little bit of ground pepper used for seasoning, but I always season everything with a little bit of ground pepper. It is garnished with fresh green beans from the produce in the store or your own garden. As long as the green beans are not over cooked, it lends a wonderful touch to this very economic meal.

Macarons a la Moron
Its 10pm, 24 days and counting till exams, and I'm banging my head against an economics text book. My solution is macarons! I run to the local shop, pick up all necessary ingredients and return home feeling hopeful and ready to create a masterpiece! I first learnt to make macarons in a baking class last summer and haven't been able to recreate them as perfectly since, and I decide tonight is the night. But who would've guessed that cheap scales, loud whisking, and my unhealthy obsession of watching 90210 reruns would be the cause of my downfall.
