Peach Vignettes
I read once about a wealthy man who loved grapes. He had everything money could buy so he relished the effort that a certain friend took to track down different grape varieties to bring him when she visited. This was how she showed her love, he said.

Mimi's Myriad of Blackberry-Related Miracles
Some people accuse me of having old-fashioned sensibilities. In many ways, these accusations are correct. In my defense, I do come by it honestly. I was raised by my Mimi, (my Grandmother, for those unfamiliar with the term) who was also raised by hers in turn. Due to her upbringing, she was well acquainted with all the traditional Appalachian methods of making do. While I remain unfamiliar with certain elements of her country education like how to castrate hogs or make lye soap, I have the proud blessing of getting to carry on many of her ideals and traditions.

Fiddler with a stick
A fiddler with a stick... Sounds crazy, no? But here, in the middle of the Georgia wilderness, you might say everyone in my family is a fiddler with a stick, trying to scratch the tip of our sticks against rocks to make them sharp without breaking them. It isn't easy. You may ask, "why do we bother with sticks when Walmart sells sharp metal rods for only five bucks?" Well, we go out into the woods because it isn't our home. And how do we manage to make amazing s'mores without fancy tools? That I can tell you in one word! Tradition!

The King of Summer
I refuse to believe anyone living in Mumbai can genuinely, truly love summer. Beaches, ice creams and barbecues are more of a December/January thing in a city where the coldest it gets is 18 degrees Celsius, if we're lucky. Summer mostly consists of sweating as soon as you step out of the shower, struggling to put on any clothes over your body as the muggy air clings to every pore of your skin, nearly crying if you need to step out of the sweet embrace of your air conditioner because no piece of clothing you own is small enough or thin enough for the vicious humidity and the unimaginable heat that makes you feel light-headed as soon as it hits you. Before I completely put you off of ever visiting Mumbai though, let me tell you the reason summer is still my favourite season; mangoes.

Elephant Ears are Summer
Hot sunny days walking along the riverwalk are some of the best days of Summer. I get to breathe in clarity and breathe out uncertainty. Summer is family reunions, barbecues, weddings, and graduations. It is the season my brown skin becomes more richly dressed in brown even when I use my sunscreen. It is the voices of friends conversing “I can’t wait to see you.” “Let’s go to the pool.” “How bout Playa del Carmen instead of Cancun?” “I think I’ll just sit on the porch and apricate all morning.” Summer is the best time to grill, find the freshest fruit, and eat multiple servings of ice cream all day long. I can sip lemonade and read a book or simply do nothing. When I think of summer, I think of quality time sitting around eating and laughing with family and friends. The emphasis is on the eating my dear friend, ‘wink’.

Recipe for a Cape Cod Clambake
Ingredients 2 coffees and 2 bagels from the Dunkin’ Donuts near your mom’s house that you stop at before you get on the highway. You’ll be looking forward to the Cape but you always enjoy the quiet ride catching up with your mom and drinking your coffee. Add 1-2 coffees if your brother Denny and his fiancee Ari drive down with you.

pasta salad
There are few things in life as dependable as a pasta salad. The simplicity in preparation alone is enough to recommend it. One bowl, one cutting board, and one good knife and you're in business! So forgiving in its demands that even the most naive and inexperienced of home cooks can arrive at the church picnic with no fear of overhearing unfortunate whispered gossip about their potluck contribution. Conversely, the endless possibilities in ingredients allow for inspired creativity when prepared by an, ahem...seasoned chef.

Keep It Juicy
I grew up immersed in the most boring food environment you can imagine. At least, that’s how it felt. It was a compromise, to be sure. My Italian mom, who insisted on making her pasta sauce from scratch, who every year spoiled us all by crafting the most amazing lasagna for the family get-together, who seriously did her best to provide balanced and nutritious meals on a tight budget, nevertheless was cooking for my Polish dad.
