cuisine
From street-food to fine dining, traditional Italian to Asian-Fusion, being well-versed in global cuisine is the first step to culinary mastery.
Ejidé
The first time I visited Houston was in 2015. My childhood friend and tour guide repeatedly took me to these fly-in-the-wall joints that served African meals. I was too giddy and excited to be out & about, so I never paid any attention to what was going on -until I saw the third plate of Jollof rice and Goatmeat land in my front- within my first two days of arrival. At that moment, I realized I was getting shortchanged. Why was I not somewhere ordering Mac n Cheese as a side or wrapping my lips around a Taco? Why was I in these dingy spots that reminded me so much of where I had come? I turned to my friend and protested angrily, "Burger Me Please!". From then on, you would think we had a residency at Waffle House and Popeyes -this was way before the chicken sandwich- and boy was I well pleased. "I could eat all the African food I cared for in two weeks." I had thought to myself, "Right now, it's strictly taste of Americana (you could throw some Asian in too!)."

For This Special Occasion I Took My Daughter to Dinner at the White House
After my kids dad died, one of the very best decisions I made was to institute “Date Nights.” Once a month each child scored one-on-one time with mom and we explored many low budget fun ways to enjoy each other’s company. Once in a while, usually upon reaching a milestone or having something special to celebrate, we would splurge and exceed our standard $10 budget.

Tiramisu
The DelBello family is, quite literally, from the old country, namely the Jewish ghetto of Rome. There's big, jolly papa Shawn, with his deadpan humor and romantic accent, whose cuisine makes people groan and roll their eyes with joy. Sweet little Ana, wife of Shawn, takes care of the customers, two cute and very American kids and a huge brindle mastiff named Trump, all with quiet, smiling serentity.

The Cove Cafe Restaurant & Grill
The pandemic, lockdown and all our favourite eateries are on a Takeout basis only. No sitting in a comfy homey locale enjoying an appetizer followed by a scrumptious entree and finished off with a sweet desert. Cooking became the daily grind. No relief, even in this quaint ‘adult lifestyle’ community. Then The Cove Café & Grill stepped in and up.

The Café
It seems to always be the most non-descript places that are the best. This emerald in the rough is a slice of the best things from Earth. When a restaurant becomes a local hangout in a tourist town, you know they have it going on. The Café on Southard is hands down my favorite restaurant in all Key West. It is not the most expensive nor the most marketed. Yet, they do so many things the best way.

Marakesh
Tucked away down a narrow side alley just off the bustling South Street, Marakesh has an unassuming front entrance. You have to knock on the heavy oak door for admission, and it feels like you are entering your own personal Narnia as you pass through the heavy drapes and enter the restaurant.

Lucy in the Rye
That's right! I deem Lucy in the Rye as the best breakfast joint in the USA! Found in the small mountain town of Sylva, North Carolina Lucy in the Rye recently opened its doors for the first time, introducing the world to the best combinations of flavor. I have been on many road trips across this country and what that means for me is I have tried many breakfast joints! Is there really anything better than a big plate of eggs benedict or waffles before heading out on an all day adventure? the answer is no. When I was younger my travels were fueled by Denny's and Red Arrow but as I grew older I found more enjoyment picking out the small town diners along the back roads of my journey. From New Hampshire's River House café, Pennsylvania's Squeaky Rail , Urban Egg in Colorado or California's Black Bear Diner there is always a good breakfast to be found... But none are like Lucy in the Rye.
