A Hairy question.

WARNING: SPOILERS for Agatha All Along, episodes 1 and 2.

The first two episodes of Agatha All Along, the first spin-off of the popular, critically acclaimed WandaVision, has arrived on Disney Plus, and already, the series is bringing levels of theories and speculation not seen with a small screen Marvel project since it's parent series first aired. Much of the speculation has involved the true identity of Joe Locke's mysterious 'Teen' character, and what prize each Coven member actually wants if they successfully reach the end of the Witches' Road. However, the first two episodes of the series have raised a new question.

First seen in WandaVision as part of some of Agnes's costumes, Agatha's Triple-Goddess brooch plays a surprisingly pivotal role in Agatha All Along, as Agnes's first clue to her own true identity as Agatha Harkness. The brooch is revealed to double as a locket, and contains a single dark lock of what seems to be human hair.

The question is, whose hair is this, and why has Agatha kept it? We have some theories.

Nicholas Scratch

In one scene of Agnes of Westview, the Detective Drama parody that forms the bulk of Agatha All Along's opening episode, Detective Agnes O'Connor's house includes what appears to be a child's bedroom, containing drawings and awards belonging to a Nicholas 'Nicky' Scratch. In episode two, when Teen's role in the new Coven is questioned, Jennifer Kale jokes about Agatha having performed a Child Sacrifice during her last trip down the Witches' Road.

From this, some fans have developed a theory that Agatha sacrificed her own son, Nicky, to gain the power of the Darkhold, and that the hair in her locket is a memento of him. Some have also connected the name of Agatha's rabbit, Senor Scratchy, to Nicholas Scratch.

In the comics, Agatha Harkness is the mother of a Warlock known as Nicholas Scratch, already grown at the time of his introduction. This Scratch causes trouble for Agatha, particularly during her time working as a Nanny for the Fantastic Four. Among his crimes are attempting to turn the people of Agatha's hometown, New Salem, against her, and trying to possess her young charge, Franklin Richards, the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Agatha eventually disowned her son, banishing him to the Dark Realm.

Rio Vidal

The Agnes of Westview segment also gave viewers their first glimpse of Aubrey Plaza's character, Rio Vidal. At first seen as an unwanted FBI Agent interfering in Agnes's murder case, Rio later appears and attacks Agatha after the latter has broken free from the remnants of Wanda's spell.

Prior to the debut of Agatha All Along, rumours emerged that Rio was a former lover, perhaps even spouse, to Agatha. Agatha and Rio's behaviour during their fight sequence, and one particular line from Rio, in response to Agatha's claim that she does not have a heart, seem to support this theory.

"Yes, I do. It's black, and it beats for you."

It is entirely possible that the lock of hair inside Agatha's locket actually belongs to Rio, a symbol of their past relationship, or maybe a spell, perhaps explaining (assuming this is not just a jab regarding Agatha's lost magic) Rio's claim that Agatha cannot kill her. Some fans also believe that Agatha made a mistake, and that the black heart on Lilia's list of potential coven members was not referring to Sharon Davis/'Mrs. Hart', but to Rio. This would make sense, as in many of the series' trailers, Rio Vidal is seen travelling on the Witches' Road with the rest of Agatha's new coven.

Hopefully, we will get some answers as Agatha All Along continues over the coming weeks.
