The first sign of diabetes is the presence of high blood sugar levels. The body cannot break down glucose for energy because the pancreas has either stopped producing insulin or does not produce enough insulin.

It is crucial to have this disease diagnosed as early as possible to prevent serious complications from occurring, which can lead to damage in up to all major organs in the body, blindness, heart disease and amputations.

Diabetes is a condition that causes high blood sugar levels. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 diabetes usually develops in childhood and is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin to overcome the body’s increased resistance to insulin. Type 2 diabetes can be caused by obesity or age as well as lifestyle factors such as diet or lack of exercise.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body can't properly convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy.

The fasting glucose test is done by measuring blood sugar after having not eaten for at least 8 hours before the test. Diabetes is diagnosed if the fasting blood glucose level is 126 mg/dl or higher on two separate tests. A diagnosis of diabetes requires a follow-up appointment with a doctor and treatment plan to monitor and control diabetes.

10 most important early signs of Diabetes are:

Frequent urination: If you're urinating more frequently than usual, it could be a sign that your kidneys are attempting to eliminate excess sugar from your blood.

Extreme thirst: When you use the restroom frequently, you lose a lot of water. This can cause dehydration and excessive thirst, which will likely lead to drinking more fluids (and going to the bathroom more). Dehydration can cause your mouth to feel like it's in the desert and your skin to feel tight or itchy.

Fatigue or weakness: Excessive fatigue, lethargy, or sleepiness can indicate that your blood sugar is out of balance. If your blood sugar levels become dangerously high or low, you may experience dizziness or even fainting.

Increased appetite or unexplained weight loss: If your body is unable to obtain enough energy from the sugar in the food you're eating, you may experience an unusual increase in your appetite, as well as sudden and unexplained weight loss.

Cuts that heal slowly: High blood sugar levels can stiffen your blood vessels, making it difficult for blood to circulate throughout your body. Because of poor circulation, minor scratches and sores heal more slowly.

Infections caused by yeast: Yeast feeds on sugar. When your body has too much glucose circulating, it can lead to yeast overgrowth in both men and women.

Pain or numbness in the extremities: Diabetics suffer from nerve damage as a result of high blood sugar and fat levels. This can result in nerve damage, which is known as diabetic neuropathy. You may feel tingling in your hands and feet. Internal organs, such as your bladder, can be affected by nerve damage.

Changes in vision: Changes in vision can be a sign of diabetic eye disease. Diabetes, if left untreated or poorly managed, can cause vision problems and even blindness.

Fruity or sweet-smelling breath: When your body is attempting to eliminate excess sugar, high ketones can cause your breath to smell sweet.
