Perfect Sports' Diesel Whey Protein (Supplement Reviews)

Whey Cool

Bad pun aside.

Perfect Sports' Diesel Whey Protein is one of the hottest selling protein supplements on the market. Whenever I ask my gym friends what supplements they take, 90% of them mention Diesel. And I can see why. I've used it myself for a better part of a year, and it's probably my favourite brand of protein (and I've had certain kinds that were better, but I find Diesel is the most consistently good).

So, what's so great about it?

And honestly, that's the easiest question I've ever had to ask myself. So, here's a short little review of the Milk Chocolate flavour. The reason for going with that flavour for this review, is because chocolate is a very common flavour that's VERY easy to get wrong. Too often I'll buy a different brand of protein that's supposed to be chocolate, but comes out as a slightly chocolaty lie.

Diesel, from Perfect Sports, is hands down the smoothest protein supplement you can get. A huge issue I have with a lot of proteins is that they don't mix as well as the packaging says they do. Even with some great products like Mutant ISOSurge, which while being some of the best tasting protein I've had in my life, I've found that it doesn't always mix well.

Diesel is a whole 'nother story. It mixes so well that it literally doesn't even feel like you've added anything to whatever liquid base you decided to use (in this case, almond milk). I almost ALWAYS get thick chunks of unblended protein in my shakes. Here, there's nothing. And I love it. For the texture alone, it's one of the best proteins you can get.

Texture: 10/10

Now, the first thing I do when I buy a new tub of protein is I open it up and sniff the product. What? It's not weird. I've had stuff that smelled like chicken feed, sawdust, and an Atari 2600 (you know, like that old plasticky smell you get from stuff from 1977), so I want to make sure that this stuff doesn't smell like it came from the back of a feed truck. Sue me.

The smell is a huge factor to me. I really don't like drinking something that has a scent that reminds me of the countless hours I spent playing Kaboom! as a kid.

However, Diesel actually smells pretty OK. OK, being the word. Upon opening my tub, I got a slight generic chocolatey scent, but nothing overwhelming. It's not the best smelling product, but it's hardly what I'd call offensive. At best, it's unremarkable; at worst, it's inoffensive.

Scent: 7/10

Lastly, the taste. Often I find myself sipping a protein shake and asking myself, "Do I actually enjoy this?" Not once did I ask myself that while trying Diesel. It LITERALLY tastes like chocolate milk. If someone made me a Diesel shake without telling me it was a protein shake, I'd have never known it wasn't chocolate milk.

The flavour is not the absolute best, but darn if it isn't close.

Taste: 8.5/10

All-in-all, Diesel is one of the best proteins around. I've tried proteins from Mutant, Musclepharm, Six Star, Inner Armour, AllMax, and Beyond Yourself Nutrition; none of those, with the lone exception of Mutant, come anywhere close to matching Diesel. Diesel New Zealand Whey Isolate is near protein perfection, with a pleasant flavour, and smooth texture that will have you rethinking what a protein shake should be.

Overall: 25.5/30 (Great)

It's got 26g of protein, 5g glutamine, and 7g of your BCAAs.

To make it better, each 30 gram scoop is only 115 calories.
