More about Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson was born on June 30, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York. He had a difficult childhood, growing up in poverty and crime. He joined various street gangs and was arrested several times. At the age of 13, he was sent to a reform school in upstate New York, where he met Bobby Stewart, a social worker and former boxer who recognized his potential and introduced him to Cus D'Amato, a renowned trainer who became his legal guardian and mentor. ²⁴
Tyson started boxing as an amateur and won two Junior Olympic gold medals in 1981 and 1982. He turned professional in 1985 and quickly rose to fame with his impressive knockout victories. He claimed his first belt at 20 years, four months, and 22 days old, when he defeated Trevor Berbick by a second-round knockout to win the WBC title. He became the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, as well as the only heavyweight to unify them in succession. He also became the lineal champion when he knocked out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds of the first round. ¹²
Tyson was nicknamed "Iron Mike" and "Kid Dynamite" in his early career, and later known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet". He was feared for his devastating punching power, speed and accuracy. He had a knockout-to-win percentage of 88%, ranking him among the greatest punchers of all time. He made 10 successful defenses of his world heavyweight title, including victories over former champions Larry Holmes and Michael Spinks. ¹²⁵
However, Tyson's career and personal life also faced many challenges and controversies. After the deaths of D'Amato and his manager Jimmy Jacobs, he aligned with Don King, a controversial promoter who was accused of exploiting him financially. He married actress Robin Givens in 1988, but they divorced in 1989 amid allegations that Tyson had physically abused her. He was also involved in several assault and harassment cases. In 1990, he lost his titles to Buster Douglas, who knocked him out in the 10th round in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. In 1992, he was convicted of rape and sentenced to six years in prison, although he was released on parole after three years. ¹²⁴
After his release from prison in 1995, Tyson attempted to regain his glory with a series of comeback fights. He won back the WBA and WBC titles in 1996 by defeating Frank Bruno and Bruce Seldon respectively. However, he lost them again to Evander Holyfield later that year by an eleventh round stoppage. Their rematch in 1997 ended when Tyson was disqualified for biting Holyfield's ears, one bite notoriously being strong enough to remove a portion of his right ear. This incident tarnished Tyson's reputation and resulted in a suspension from boxing for over a year. In 2002, Tyson fought for the world heavyweight title again, but lost by knockout to Lennox Lewis. He retired from boxing in 2005 after two consecutive losses to Danny Williams and Kevin McBride. ¹²⁴
Since his retirement, Tyson has appeared in various TV shows and films, such as The Hangover, Entourage, Mike Tyson Mysteries and Ip Man 3. He has also written a memoir, Undisputed Truth, and performed a one-man show based on it. He has also launched a cannabis business, Tyson Ranch, and a podcast, Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson. He has also expressed interest in returning to the ring for exhibition bouts, such as the one he had with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. ²⁴
Tyson is regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, and one of the most influential and controversial figures in sports history. He has been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He has also received various awards and honors, such as the Ring magazine Fighter of the Year (1986 and 1988), the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality (1989), and the ESPY Award for Best Boxer (1997). ¹²⁴¹: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Mike-Tyson
