What Swimming With Sharks for the First Time Was Like
Like any Jaws-era child, I grew up frightened of sharks. Don't get me wrong, I never believed they were mindless monsters who purposefully seek out humans to attack, but I definitely didn't trust them. So much so that as a little girl I wouldn't even swim alone in a pool. I was convinced one would somehow sneak through the filter and "get" me — clearly I didn't understand how filters worked yet.

Time, Patience, and Cuddles
She cowers in the corner, surrounded by her plush igloo—her safety zone. She most likely will remain huddled inside it until the visitors leave, the lights are dimmed, and the staff go home. Only then will she dare to move, darting out from her igloo and straight to her food dish and water bowl.

Ultimate Guide of Fruits and Vegetables that Dogs Can and Cannot Eat
I have a rescue pit bull named Xander, so I know a thing or two about the fruits and vegetables that dogs can and cannot eat. It's especially a big deal for me because I belong to a community garden and eat a whole food diet. There's no refined sugar in my house, despite the protestations of my son Jarret. I tell him he can eat junk food at his mom's! But even though it might seem like fruits and veggies are okay for Xander because they're all natural, that's actually far from true!

And They're Off!
It's Monday, April 30th at 1:30 in the morning. While the rest of the city of McComb, MS sleeps, animal control, volunteers, and foster parents are hard at work to load 27 dogs onto a transport truck. Where are they headed? SHPR (South Hills Pet Rescue) in South Park, PA!

When Your Roommate Has Pets
You may be wondering, "what's wrong with living with animals? Those ones are sooooo cute!" And... You'd be right. They are very cute...and also not mine. I've never had a pet of my own. My family traveled a lot when I was in school and we just didn't have time for a pet, as much as I wanted one. During university, I lived mostly on campus which didn't allow pets until this past year. In September, I moved in with two girls, one who I knew and one who I did not. Both were lovely people who had pets, two of which are pictured here. Now, over my four months there, I learned a lot of things about living with pets, and moreover, living with pets that are not yours. Now there are a lot of pros to having pets. Science has proven that animals help us calm down and reduce stress, however, these adorable hell-spawn tended to cause more stress than I cared to have.

The Eastern Timber Wolf
I volunteered at the Timber Wolf Preservation Society (TWPS) from 2012 to its closing in 2014. As a tour guide, I learned things I never thought I would. My first-hand experience showed me that much of what I thought I knew about wolves before was false. They are a beautiful species that I think everyone can learn from.

Is a Fox a Cat or a Dog?
I was visiting a friend in Gold Hill, Colorado. It's right outside Boulder, but several thousand feet above it, up an unpaved road. The foxes there are so unafraid of people that they come right up to back porches. They'll even eat food if you leave it out for them, or just steal your leather moccasins.

A Tribute to the Dog Who Saved My Life
She was a scruffy mongrel my brother and I had picked out from the pound. She was the only dog that didn't look like it wanted to rip off my arm, and the only one my small frame could hold back on a leash. In excitement, we eventually persuaded our parents that this dog, this was the one.

What the Cluck You Talking About?
Pets, pets, pets. We love them from the tops of their pointy ears all the way down to the tips of their swishy tails. Dogs, cats, and hamsters being the most typical—perhaps a snake, hedgehog, or parrot if you're rather adventurous in your love for animals. I've even known a few to tell lengthy stories of their adorable tarantulas and cockroaches. Yikes!
