Eating My Way Through Heartbreak

Unnecessary Line Challenge

You've left me without warning.

No note, no talk, no phone call.

Not even a cowardly text or email,

Which would have been much worse

But at least death-like certain.

You always avoided eye contact

Whenever I tried to discuss

Our commitment, so it checks.

Walking out on me is just sooooo you.

Yesterday, you just picked up all your stuff -

Your toothbrush, other toiletries, and

All six of your pants and shirts -

And left, light like a breeze,

Unrooted as tumbleweed.

Grief-stricken and shell-shocked,

I launched Operation Mango Yogurt.

We stocked our fridge for two just

The day before yesterday.

So I'm eating for two now, too

Just to get back at you.

In Andi's story, a donkey died getting its toes painted.

I've eaten your favorite mango yogurt,

All four tubs of it in one sitting.

I chased them with your chocolate donuts,

Both of them and some sprinkles

and your organic cherry juice.

As soon as my tummy ache was gone,

I ate your General Tso's chicken leftovers.

You hardly touched it yesterday.

Pepperoni pizza, steak with risotto on the side

And your Ben & Jerry's ice cream for dessert.

Now my tummy hurts along with my heart.

Don't come back, I have nothing to feed you.

Love that you mentioned Andrea's donkey hahaha. This is too funny, Lana <3

See, you used near-rhyme here: “And left, light like a breeze, Unrooted as tumbleweed.” and it’s effective, as it’s both the hinge and thesis of the poem. This is earned rhyme, and it’s spectacular. 💖

Hahahahahahahaha that story of Andi's was such a hoot! I laughed seeing that that was your unnecessary line! You nailed this challenge!
