Memories Remain

As the winter sun started to set, darkness settled in; the little ones were sent to bed, then the fun began.

The gifts were carried out of their secret spots; your smile brightened the room as you prepared Santa's scene to surprise the tots.

The moment you became a dad and later on a grandpa, this was your favorite time of the year; you always brought the Christmas cheer.

When morning arrived, the kids crawled out of bed eager to rush down to the tree; presents from Santa spread around as they screamed with glee.

You laughed and smiled while watching the kids play; it brought you so much joy, more than words and memories can say.

I'm forever thankful for that last Christmas with you, and it will always be in my heart; it's those memories this time of year that keep me from falling apart.

My baby girl, your first granddaughter, smiling and laughing so loud at your funny faces; that was her first ever Christmas and you made sure to cover all the bases.

Everything was perfect that holiday, and in my memory it will always be; your granddaughter is an adult now, oh how I wish you were here to see.

Memories of that last Christmas are all that remain, you passed away four days later; etched forever in my soul is that final goodbye, there has never been a holiday greater.
