Some Thoughts for Our Age

Double Bill? Honest Truth?

Oh, how interesting things become in a new year.

Here we are, just past January; just after a Super Bowl, and a Grammy ceremony; just after the break between what was and what we are is so stark and clear that even the ones naive enough to not believe things now accept that the ugliness was always there under the rock they refused to lift.

It is a very cold start to February. I have reached one month of teaching at the college into a new semester, along with the other work I have on contract. My notes and ideas are piling up for several contacts and online pages, and I wonder where we are heading.

Yes, I said, 'We'. I am in Montréal, Canada. I have no reason to believe that the nation to the south - the one just across a very near border - is going to go down on its own. Many friends of mine who live down there write to tell me what their lives are like; many others are asking more frequently how easy it is to become a citizen of the Great White North. I have always said that when things get difficult, you have to fight. You cannot run away and expect things to improve on their own. I am not prepared to give up on your country; you do not get the right to cut and run.

But still, I wonder...

That leader with all of those colourful nicknames is claiming so much that just does not make any sense.

Racist video meme of a former president and his wife?

I didn't make a mistake. I mean ... I look at a lot of, thousands of, things, and I looked at the beginning of it. It was fine.

Performance of a Puerto Rican American at the country's most popular sporting event (and does he know that Puerto Rico is a part of the USA)?

(There is) nothing inspirational about this mess of a Halftime Show and watch, it will get great reviews from the Fake News Media, because they haven’t got a clue of what is going on in the REAL WORLD. (CAPS his)

And on his close association with Epstein and his notorious documents, where his name appears over 6000 times?

(It is) really time for the country to get on to something else.

Maybe I am getting old. Maybe I have too many memories of leaders and figures in the media that I could admire. Maybe I am easily embarrassed and have no patience left for such stupidity and ignorance. Or maybe I am...wait for it...triggered by an administration that feels it can pull out the old bread-and-circuses trick to distract us from what is right in front of us.

And that brings me to the image above and the latest distraction on certain screens.

I discovered that her film is playing here. And so have my colleagues and friend who love movies.

And there is serious talk about paying the price of a ticket to actually see it...and critique it.

But I need your help.

Should I write a proper review of this film? I am a critic, and I have at least two book reviews in rough in front of me, but this is just too...tempting. I sat through some incredibly strange and disturbing films in my life, but this feels like it will be the motherlode for my cynicism and overwhelming scribbling talents.

Ahem.

Anyway, as I said, we live in odd times where certain truths have outed and others are still begging to be heard. Is it worth your and my time to see this weird pet project?

Let me know.

Indeed, it does...

I've read so many reviews starting out with "I've watched Melania so you don't have to" that I personally would only watch it if someone paid me to do it. But ultimately it is your decision, Kendall, you can always find something even in the worst movies. Maybe food for your cynicism and some satirical relief. The cover photo made me chuckle.

I am sure your scathing assessment would be a delight to read, but I am not sure the diabolical film in question merits a moment of your critical attention, let alone financial support!

I can’t tell you what to do or not to do, but personally I couldn’t bear to spend money on that film. I hate the idea of sending money to anyone in trumps circle. And I’ve been boycotting Amazon. Also a critical review might be fun, but super low ticket sales would speak more loudly. On the other hand if your friends are going it would kinda suck to miss out on the fun
