The History of Tobacco in Florida
The scientific name for Tobacco is Nicotiana tabacum, and is in the same family of Solanaceae, which includes tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. Tobacco is characterized by the presence of the alkaloid nicotine which is found in all parts of the plant except the seed. The production of Tobacco has been a staple in Florida’s history and foundation long before the Civil War. Quincy, Florida grew a great deal of what was known as “Speckled leaf tobacco”, a sun variety grown on hammock land. This tobacco was hauled by wagon to the gulf port of St. Marks and transshipped by sailboat, about one-third of the annual yield being exported.
